Charging an EV

This is a short post on our 1st year of charging an EV. When we first bought our Tesla, we thought we had to charge at public charging stations as the Car did not include a charger.

This is how our re-charging has happened over the last 11 months.

10 Months Charging Stats

We prefer to recharge our car up to 80% daily to maintain a 400km range daily.

It costs us about 60c to $1 per night (at home) to recharge a lost 50km to 100km daily.

Average Spend A Night

It’s worth the 1-minute hassle of plugging the car in daily to trickle charge it back up using cheap surplus peak renewable energy from the grid. It costs us $17 to $21 to recharge our average monthly driving range at home.

Month Stats

It takes 10 seconds to plug in and walk away. Nothing beats knowing your car has 400+ km range every time you get in it. The car has a 530KM range if we charge to 100% every day.

Charging at Home

We use the Telsa Mobile Charger and the 240V 15A connector at home.

This plugs into our power box.

On road trips, we schedule a 100% charge at home the night before we leave. When on the road, we prefer to use Evie, Tesla Super Chargers then NRMA, Ampol, and Charge Fox Chargers.

Sites like PlugShare and A Better Route Planner help us find other chargers.

Charging In the Outback or in future Emergencies (e.g Zombie Apocalypse)

I have purchased several charger adapters for the Tesla Mobile Connector (and extension cords) and Type 2 to Type 2 extension cords to allow charging up to 32 meters away from any PowerPoint (240V (10A or 15A) or three phases (3/5 pin)) in Australia just in case.

Edit: We sold the Caravan and 2x Three Phase plugs as we did not use them.

Frunk Conmtents

AUSY8 is a great channel that has driven a Tesla Model Y around Australia.

There is no shortage of public chargers in Australia. Thanks Plugshare.
